the friend who screenshots your unhinged text and pastes it into a DIFFERENT chat

June 24, 2026·5 min read·by the shadow group chat

You typed one insane sentence into a chat you thought was safe. Nine minutes later three strangers from a DIFFERENT group know you said it, cropped, undated, and captioned "look what they said." Marisol, we need to talk.

the crop is the crime

Here is what actually happened. Tuesday, 1:04am, in the seven-person chat where we say our worst thoughts out loud, you sent a message. It had context. It had a full paragraph before it setting up the bit. It was, in situ, a normal reaction to a normal conversation about whether a hot dog counts as a sandwich.

Marisol took that message.

She did not screenshot the paragraph before it. She did not screenshot the reply after it where I clarified I was joking. She thumb-and-volume-buttoned exactly ONE line, cropped it so tight you can see the individual pixels of my desperation, and airlifted it into the OTHER chat — the one with her coworkers, the one where nobody has the receipts — with a four-word indictment: "look what they said."

Look what I said? Marisol. You edited it. This is not journalism. This is a ransom note assembled from magazine letters. You are the friend who quotes "I could kill for a nap" and forwards only "I could kill."

exhibit A, timestamped 1:04am: a full, contextualized sentence. exhibit B, timestamped 1:13am: the same sentence with a haircut, standing trial in a courtroom I did not know existed.

Nine minutes. That is the entire lifespan of my dignity. Nine minutes between me trusting a room and me being deposed in a room I've never been in.

the second chat is a shadow government

The worst part is not the forward. The worst part is realizing there is a WHOLE OTHER CHAT.

You think you are in the group chat. You are not in the group chat. You are in the group chat that gets screenshotted INTO the real group chat, where the actual discussion happens, where Marisol pastes your crimes and a jury of people you've met twice go "NO WAY she said that" with three crying-laughing emojis and zero cross-examination.

Every friend group has this. The visible chat and the shadow parliament. And Marisol is the leaker with diplomatic immunity, walking documents across the border like she's got clearance. If you want to understand the full ecosystem of who's who in these rooms, we made a whole map of the archetypes — but the screenshotter is the one you never see coming, because she smiles at brunch and subpoenas you by dinner.

Here is her method, laid out like the pattern it is:

  • Step one: be present in the chat. Contribute nothing quotable herself. Suspicious.
  • Step two: wait. Marisol is patient. Marisol has the patience of a woman who knows you WILL eventually say something unhinged, because you always do, because that is what the chat is FOR.
  • Step three: crop. Caption. Deploy. "look what they said." No context. No date. No mercy.
  • Step four: watch the other chat go feral while you sleep, unaware, defenseless, dreaming of hot dogs.

"look what they said" is doing SO much work

Four words. Let's prosecute them individually.

"Look" — a command. She is directing traffic to your worst moment. She is a docent at the museum of your bad texts.

"what" — implies there is a specific, egregious THING. Builds anticipation. The other chat is now leaning in.

"they" — the distancing. She will not say your name. You are "they." You are a cryptid. You are folklore now. Somewhere a coworker of Marisol's thinks I am an unhinged legend and we have never met.

"said" — past tense, sealed, done. Not "joked." Not "in the context of a nine-message thread about sandwiches." SAID. As if I stood at a podium.

And the caption is always neutral on purpose. Marisol never adds an opinion. That's the genius of it — she doesn't editorialize, she just LEAVES it there like a body, and lets the other chat do the convicting. Plausible deniability. "I didn't say anything, I just shared it." Marisol. You are the one who leaked the Pentagon Papers and then said "I just thought people should know."

Did you also screenshot my apology? No. Did you screenshot the part where I explained the bit? No. You screenshotted the felony and left the alibi on the cutting room floor.

the loving part, because there is one

Here is the thing about Marisol. She is the same person who, when I actually needed her, screenshotted a red flag from a guy I was texting and forwarded it to ME with "absolutely not, block him." Same skill set. Same crop tool. Same speed. Deployed, for once, in my defense.

That's the whole tragedy. The screenshotter is not evil. The screenshotter is TALENTED. Marisol could work for the FBI. She has the reflexes of a court stenographer and the storage of a woman who never deletes anything. In a real emergency she is the friend you want, the one with the receipts, the one who remembers exactly what he said in March.

She just also cannot be trusted with a single unguarded sentence at 1am. Both things. Ride-or-die, but also filing your comedy out of context in a foreign jurisdiction.

So this is not a cancellation. This is a summons. Marisol is getting a card. Not an angry one — an affectionate, itemized, screenshotted-and-forwarded-into-permanence one, so she knows exactly which line got cropped and exactly which chat it landed in and exactly how funny it is that she got caught.

If you also have a Marisol — a leaker, a cropper, a "look what they said" merchant who runs a shadow government out of a second group chat — go make her a card. Crop the truth into something she can screenshot forever.

Send a card. It takes 30 seconds. They'll laugh, scream, or both.
