the friend who narrates the whole movie, then shushes YOU
There is a specific person who cannot watch a movie. He can attend a movie. He can sit near a movie. But watch it, in silence, like a functioning adult? Not in this timeline. His name is Devin, and he has never once let a plot reveal itself.
The lights dim. The studio logo hasn't even finished swooshing. And Devin, at a volume he believes is a whisper but is legally a podcast, leans in: "ok so this is gonna be about the wife, watch."
We are eleven seconds in. There is no wife yet. There is a WHALE.
the running commentary nobody subscribed to
Devin narrates like the movie is buffering and he's the only one who can see the whole file. Every character who appears gets an immediate, confident, wrong bio.
Here is a real transcript from March, when we watched a two-hour thriller and Devin turned it into a four-hour experience with zero intermissions:
0:14 — "he's def the bad guy, look at his coat" 0:31 — "wait is that the guy from before?" 0:32 — it was not the guy from before 0:47 — "called it. the coat guy." (the coat guy was a barista with four seconds of screen time) 1:09 — "ok watch, the brother's gonna betray him" 1:10 — the character does not have a brother 1:11 — "...or the friend, whatever"
Do you know what it is to hear "watch, this is the twist" spoken OVER the twist? To have the surprise pre-chewed and spat directly into your ear canal like a mother bird who hates you? Devin doesn't watch movies. He live-tweets them into your skull. He is a director's commentary track for a director he has never met, about a plot he does not yet understand, at a decibel level that a home theater cannot legally support.
And the predictions. He announces every twist thirty seconds early, gets it wrong, and then when the ACTUAL twist lands he goes "OH so it was HIM" as if he wasn't just betting the whole house on the coat barista. The man has a 4% accuracy rate and the confidence of a weather app that's never once been sued.
"wait what did they say"
Here is the crime that should carry actual jail time.
Devin will be talking. Loudly. Over dialogue. And then a character will say something important — the key line, the one the whole scene hinges on — and Devin, who was TALKING DURING IT, will turn to you and say, at full volume, "wait what did they say?"
Sir. They said the thing. They said it while you were narrating your coat theory. The information you are requesting was destroyed in transit BY YOU. You are the reason the line is gone. You mugged the sentence and now you're filing a police report about the mugging.
Last week it was "Dune." A character delivered a genuinely load-bearing piece of lore and Devin, mid-sentence about how "this reminds me of that other desert one," snapped, "wait — what'd he say about the water?" I don't KNOW, Devin. I was busy hearing YOU. We are now both uninformed. We have achieved a collective knowledge of zero. You dragged us into the ignorance together, hand in hand, like a very annoying Thelma and Louise.
And then — the pause button. He hits pause to ask a question the movie was in the middle of answering. He'll pause on the exact frame where the answer appears on screen, IN TEXT, and ask the question out loud. If you group-watch with people like this, you already know: the real horror movie is the commentary. There's a reason the group chats have a dedicated channel just to warn each other before pressing play.
and then. AND THEN. he shushes you.
Here is where I need everyone standing.
After ninety minutes of unsolicited narration, after burning every twist to the ground, after asking "who's that" about the main character for the fourth time — someone else in the room will make one small comment. One. A single normal-length human observation about the plot.
And Devin — Devin, the human laugh track, the man who has not shut up since the whale — will lift one finger to his lips and go:
"shhhh."
He shushed ME. In MY apartment. During a movie HE is currently ruining. With popcorn HE didn't buy. On a couch I'm going to have to have professionally cleaned because of a Venmo-request I sent him for $6.50 for "snacks (emotional damages)" that he declined with the note "lol what."
The audacity. The RANGE. To be the sole source of noise pollution for the entire runtime and then police a stranger's whisper like an usher who's been on the job for forty years and hates his life. He treats his own commentary as ambient — necessary, load-bearing, part of the film's official audio mix — but your six words as a war crime.
a loving note to the guilty
Devin, we adore you. You would drive four hours to help someone move a couch and you'd narrate that too, and honestly at that point it's fine, narrate the couch. You are wonderful. You are also, cinematically, a menace who should be legally required to watch all films inside a soundproofed pod with the subtitles ON and your mouth taped in a way that spells "I'm sorry."
Here is the deal we're offering. You may have ONE (1) comment per act. Three total. Bank them. Spend them wisely. The "wait what did they say" is retired forever, because you are the reason, you are always the reason. And the shush? The shush is now yours to keep, in silence, alone, in your heart.
Some crimes are too small for a real argument and too big to let slide. That's the entire genre this website exists for. You can't put someone in movie-jail, but you CAN send them an anonymous card that says, with love, "you talked through Dune and I will never recover."
Know a Devin? Send him the card he's been narrating over. Make it at /create.
