"down for anything" is a threat, actually

July 9, 2026·5 min read·by the group chat

There is a specific kind of person who will type "omg YES i'm SO down, this trip is gonna heal us" into the group chat at 11:42pm, and then contribute exactly nothing to the trip for the following nine weeks. She is not a villain in the classic sense. She smiles. She brings good snacks. Her name is Priya and she is single-handedly the reason we still do not have a beach house for the weekend of July 24th.

Let's talk about it.

the planning doc is a graveyard and you built the tombstone

Here is the timeline, because the timeline is DAMNING.

June 3, 9:15am: someone (a hero, a saint, a person who will die young from cortisol) makes a shared doc titled "SUMMER TRIP LFG." Four color-coded tabs. A date poll. A budget breakdown down to the cleaning fee. This person tags everyone.

June 3, 9:16am: Priya reacts to the message with the little heart. Not a reply. A heart. The heart is her entire contribution to the fiscal year.

June 3 through July 8: silence from Priya specifically. The doc's "last edited by" never once says her name. We can SEE the edit history. We know. Everyone else filled in their availability. Priya's row is a single unbroken beam of white space, glowing like the light at the end of a tunnel that leads nowhere.

And then — July 9, 2:04am — she posts in the group chat: "wait are we still doing the trip?? i'm literally counting down 🥹"

Counting down. Counting DOWN. From what number, Priya. You have never entered a date into the poll. You cannot count down to a thing that has no coordinates. You are counting down to a location in the abstract, a Schrödinger's beach house that is simultaneously booked and not booked because YOU have not picked a weekend. If you want to see the full genre she belongs to, we've catalogued her cousins over in group chat archetypes.

"i'm flexible!" is not a personality, it's a hostage situation

Every time someone proposes dates, Priya does the thing. You know the thing.

  • Proposed: July 18–20. Priya: "hmm i MIGHT have a wedding? lemme check and confirm by tonight." (She did not confirm by tonight. It is now three tonights later.)
  • Proposed: July 25–27. Priya: "ooh that could work! whatever's easiest for everyone honestly, i'm so flexible 🫶"
  • Someone locks July 25–27 based on this. Priya: "oh wait no that's the wedding."

WHAT wedding, Priya. Whose. We have known you for six years and you have never once mentioned this person getting married. This wedding materializes exclusively at the moment of commitment and vanishes the instant the pressure lifts, like a summer thunderstorm or a Groupon. "I'm flexible" from Priya does not mean flexible. It means "I reserve the right to veto after you've done all the work." It's a claim of infinite availability that collapses into zero the second availability is requested. We wrote a whole field guide to this exact move for the chronically noncommittal over at flaky friends, and honestly it should have her photo on it.

the deposit. we need to talk about the deposit.

The house got booked anyway. It got booked because two people fronted the entire deposit — $1,240, split, so $620 each — on the shared understanding that everyone would Venmo their share "by end of week." That was three weeks ago.

Priya's Venmo status: a rich and vibrant social life. She Venmo'd someone $18 for "🍜🍜" on Tuesday. She Venmo'd someone $45 for "concert!!!!" on Thursday. She requested $6 from her roommate for "ur half of the paper towels" — she is out here ITEMIZING PAPER TOWELS — and yet the $206 she owes for the house sits untouched, a debt so pristine it belongs in a museum.

"omg i'll send it tonight i just have to move money over from savings"

She has said this four separate nights. That is not a savings account. That is a folk tale. That is a lie with a plot.

Here's the receipt that broke me. She "couldn't Venmo" on Monday at 8:51pm — allegedly deep in a bank-transfer saga, wrestling with the very architecture of modern finance — and then at 8:56pm posted a story of her nails captioned "treat urself 💅". Five minutes, Priya. Five minutes between "the app is being weird" and a $70 gel manicure. The app was not being weird. The app was working perfectly. You just prioritized your cuticles over our security deposit and then documented it publicly.

the notes. she has NOTES.

Now. The part where the movie flips.

We are on the phone finalizing everything. The house is booked, the deposit is (mostly) paid, the group is exhausted but functional. And Priya — Priya who has not opened the listing once, whose name appears nowhere in the edit history, who thinks the trip is on the 24th when it is on the 25th — Priya clears her throat and says:

"okay so i actually had some THOUGHTS about the airbnb?"

I'm sorry. Thoughts. You have thoughts. About a listing you have demonstrably never clicked. She proceeds to raise concerns about the kitchen (it has a kitchen), question whether the beach is "walkable" (it is 4 minutes; this is IN the listing), and suggest we "maybe look at a couple others just to compare" — a sentence that, deployed on July 10th for a July 25th trip, is not a suggestion. It is an act of war.

The audacity is almost beautiful. To do zero of the labor and arrive at the finish line with EDITS. To ghost the doc for six weeks and then show up as a surprise Airbnb consultant billing us in emotional damages.

and yet.

Here's the thing. We booked the trip anyway. We saved her a room — the good one, with the window. Because when your car died at 6am in a grocery store parking lot last winter, Priya was there in eleven minutes with jumper cables and a coffee, no thoughts, no notes, no bank-transfer saga. She is a menace on a planning doc and a saint in a crisis and somehow the same person.

Which is exactly why she deserves a card. Not a callout — a love language. Anonymous, so she spends the whole trip squinting at each of us going "was this you??"

Prosecute your own Priya, lovingly. Make the card.

Send a card. It takes 30 seconds. They'll laugh, scream, or both.

also worth reading.
