"leaving now!!" — a text you sent from inside the shower
The reservation was for 7:30. At 7:31 my phone lit up: "leaving now!!" Two exclamation points. From a man I could hear was, unmistakably, still in the shower.
This is about Devin. Devin has never been on time to anything in the recorded history of Devin. And I need to walk you through the timeline, because the timeline is a crime scene.
a forensic breakdown of "leaving now!!"
Let's establish the facts. "Leaving now" is not a location. It is not a departure. It is a genre of fiction, and Devin is its most prolific author.
Here is the actual sequence from last Friday, timestamps pulled directly from my phone because I am a person who keeps EVIDENCE:
- 7:31pm — "leaving now!!" (I can hear the water running. Devin, I can hear the loofah.)
- 7:44pm — "omg traffic is insane rn"
- 7:52pm — "5 mins away!!"
- 8:09pm — "5 mins away" (this is a DIFFERENT five minutes. a second, unrelated five minutes. time is a flat circle and the circle is Devin.)
- 8:16pm — strolls in. sunglasses ON. inside. at night. says "traffic was CRAZY."
The traffic, Devin. Let's talk about the traffic. I checked. I am not proud of this, but I opened Maps and I checked your route and it was GREEN. Bright, glorious, unobstructed green, the whole way. The only traffic between your apartment and this restaurant was the traffic in your soul, the internal gridlock of a man who genuinely believes he can shower, dress, and teleport in the same four minutes.
"5 mins away" is the load-bearing lie of the entire operation. Five minutes away from WHAT. You were five minutes away at 7:52 and you were five minutes away at 8:09 and you arrived at 8:16, which means for seventeen minutes you existed in a fixed state of five-minutes-away, like a ghost, like a screensaver bouncing off the walls of a parking garage you had not yet left.
the parking spot you had not left
Here is the part that keeps me up at night. At 7:52, when you sent "5 mins away," you were in your car. Fine. Progress. Except you were in your car IN YOUR OWN DRIVEWAY, sending texts. I know this because when I called you at 7:54 I could hear that specific silence of a car that is on but not moving. No road noise. No blinker. Just the ambient hum of a man who thinks the text itself is the transportation.
You do not understand that "leaving now" and actually leaving are separate events that must both occur. In your head, announcing the departure IS the departure. The text is the car. The intention is the arrival. You have gamified punctuality down to its emotional core and simply skipped every physical step in between.
Devin's entire theory of time is that if he says a number confidently enough, the universe will round down to meet him.
And look — I want to be fair, because I love this man and I would help him move apartments at 6am (he would text "leaving now" and show up at 9:30, but I'd be there). The thing is, chronic lateness is a choice dressed up as a personality. Nobody who's late to everything is late to their own flight. Funny how the "5 mins away" king makes the boarding group. Funny how "traffic" clears right up when there's a nonrefundable ticket involved.
If this timeline is making your palms sweat because it's YOU, I have gentle news and it lives at /for/oversleepers, the support group for people whose alarms are merely suggestions.
you're not late, you're editing
The reframe I've landed on: Devin isn't late. Devin is doing a director's cut of every departure. There's a pre-shower phase, a "quick" email, a "where are my keys" arc that runs three acts, and a mandatory stop to stand in the kitchen for ninety seconds contemplating nothing. This is not getting ready. This is a bottle episode.
And the tragedy is the confidence. A late person who apologizes is one thing. Devin swaggers in with the sunglasses and the fabricated traffic report like he's the one owed an explanation. There is no remorse in the "5 mins away" texter. Only a serene, unearned belief that everyone's schedule is a rough draft and his is the final.
Some petty science for the accused:
- If you're always 20 minutes late, you are not late. You have simply chosen a different, worse start time and declined to inform anyone.
- "Traffic" is only an excuse if it existed. Screenshots are free. The map does not love you enough to lie for you.
- Sending "leaving now" from the shower is the "wrote the essay" of adult friendship. We can tell. We can ALWAYS tell.
Devin, if you ever read this: I built you a whole restaurant reservation and you built me a fictional traffic jam. That's not a fair trade. This is the same energy as the friend who cancels at 6:58 citing a dying phone and is active on Instagram at 7:04 — you're just doing it in person, in real time, in sunglasses.
I forgive you. I will keep saving you the seat. But the seat now comes with consequences, and the consequence is a card.
so we made you a card
You cannot fix a Devin with a conversation. Conversations are things Devin arrives 20 minutes late to. What you CAN do is send an anonymous little card that says, with love and receipts, "we clocked the shower text, we always clock the shower text."
Pick the crime, name no names, let the guilt do the arriving-on-time for once. Make the card at /create — it'll get there before Devin does.
